T.J. Davis, dead at age 93, loved to help, says son Mac BY P. CHRISTINE SMITH AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

T.J. Davis, longtime Lubbock resident and father of country music star and actor Mac Davis, died Friday at 93.

Davis' widow, Alice, and Mac Davis both stressed Saturday that first and foremost, the elder Davis loved and served others.

'My husband was always here for his family. He was always here for me,' she said of her husband of 47 years. 'All the grandchildren loved to come home and see Granddaddy.'

T.J. Davis shared stories with the children and loved to poke fun at and play with them, family members said.

But reaching far beyond his immediate family, T.J. Davis went out of his way, even in his older years, to help others.

During one phone conversation seven years ago, Mac Davis said, he asked his father how he was feeling.

The elder Davis complained of a sore shoulder, and Mac Davis asked him what he had done to it. His father said he had been building a wheelchair ramp for an 'old woman' to whom he delivered Meals on Wheels. A helper did not show to assist with the job, so Davis, then 86, removed all the materials from the pickup and built the ramp alone.

'He's helped more people in this town,' Mac Davis said. 'He loved to help people. He lived to help people.'

T.J. Davis was a deacon and an active member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Alice Davis said.

'He also was active in helping with church repairs,' she said.

Davis was a commercial builder and owned T.J. Davis Construction Co. as well as College Court Efficiency Apartments.

'He was amazing,' Mac Davis said of his father's ability to help and serve others. 'Right now he's probably fussing with St. Peter over repainting that gate up there.'
